Monday.
Before lunch.
When I entered the salon I met one of the interns who worked there. Her name is Inger-Lise. She showed me around in the salon and explained a little about how they work and what goes where (products, doll heads, hair dye etc). In the break room I got introduced to another of the interns, her name is Silje.
I started out by putting the different products in the salon into shelves. I noticed that the brand "KMS" was being used a lot in this salon. I didn't have any specific assignments given to me so i just practiced on braiding hair on one of the dolls. The interns explained to me that Monday and Tuesday are the two days in the week when there's not that much to do. I helped carry out some trash from the storage.
After lunch.
I kept on braiding hair on the dolls. Inger-Lise showed me how to do a spin braid. It took me a while to get a hang of it. The technique that we used made the braid look really pretty. They told me that if they had a young customer who was a girl, they used to braid the hair like that if they had time. young girls really seemed to like that.
All in all the day was OK. It got a boring a lot because there was not much for me to do.
Tuesday.
Before lunch
When I arrived at work I went in the break room and sat there for a while with three interns and one hairdresser. After sitting there for a while talking, they started to work on different assignments they had. I sat down with the doll heads once more and braided their hair. I helped sorting a few things in the storage.
After lunch
I observed how the hairdressers to a specific type of highlighting, and isolating the hair with tin foil so the highlights didn't mix up with the rest of the hair. After a while i went back to the doll heads. I tried combining some of the braids that i knew of. I also observed and learned how you color eyelashes. Silje and I decided to paint my nails. They had a box full of equipment that were used to make beautiful designs. I were really amazed of how easy it actually was to use the equipment they had.
This day was also pretty OK. It didn't really happen much more than the day before, so I found this day to be a bit boring as well.
Wednesday.
Before lunch
Today the salon were more busy with customers than Monday and Tuesday. I got to know more about dying hair and some smart tips on how the dye would hold longer in the hair. Other than that, i braided on the dolls again because i didn't really know what else to do.
After lunch
I observed one of the hairdressers bleach a customers hair. I noticed that the hairdressers seem to know many of the customers that stops by, especially some of the women who come in to get their hair cut, washed or dyed. They always have conversations about many different things. It sounded more like two friends having a conversation than a hairdresser and a customer. That's really important in the hairdressing business I've learned. One of the interns taught me how to clean the combs after they've been used. I found that interesting. I helped to clean up in the storage today as well.
Today was basically like Monday and Tuesday, it was OK in general, but at the same time boring.
All in all, the I think the salon is very pretty and with good people. However, it wasn't really a fun week for me. I felt like if I asked about something that i would just bother the people who worked there. I didn't want to be in their way, so i tried keeping my distance. I guess that made it hard for me to really get an actual feeling of what working in a hair salon is about. But I know that i don't want to be a hairdresser.
